Ebook About
‘Slowly Down the Ganges’ is seen as a vintage Newby masterpiece, alongside ‘A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush’ and ‘Love and War in the Apennines’. Told with Newby's self-deprecating humour and wry attention to detail, this is a classic of the genre and a window into an enchanting piece of history. On his forty-forth birthday, Eric Newby sets out on an incredible journey: to travel the 1,200-mile length of India's holy river. In a misguided attempt to keep him out of trouble, Wanda, his life-long travel companion and wife, is to be his fellow boatwoman. Their plan is to begin in the great plain of Hardwar and finish in the Bay of Bengal, but the journey almost immediately becomes markedly slower and more treacherous than either had imagined - running aground sixty-three times in the first six days.Travelling in a variety of unstable boats, as well as by rail, bus and bullock cart, and resting at sandbanks and remote villages, the Newbys encounter engaging characters and glorious mishaps, including the non-existence of large-scale maps of the country, a realisation that questions of pure 'logic' cause grave offense and, on one occasion, the only person in sight for miles is an old man who is himself unsure where he is. Newby's only consolation: on a river, if you go downstream, you're sure to end up somewhere…

Book Slowly Down the Ganges Review :

I was laughing and reminiscing about my own trips to India as I read this book, until I was suddenly quite appalled by events related in "Remembrance of Things Past". This is the chapter where Newby describes a visit to an Indian military station and reminisces about living at that station for six months when he was a young soldier under the Raj. Clearly attempting to amuse (and only amuse) the reader, Newby relates events that occurred one evening when he and two other soldiers apparently raped young girls during a visit to a brothel.Such events can only be called rape, and Newby clearly emphasized how young the girls were. (Had this event involved adults it would have been distasteful and hardly humorous). The girls were so young that the men did not need to worry about acquiring "a dose" -- a sexually transmitted disease. In multiple pages, Newby makes it clear that getting "a dose" would have been the only cause of regret for the soldiers' actions. When the soldiers arrived at the brothel, an eight or nine-year old boy was brought out for them to inspect. Newby appears to want the reader to be amused about what was happening to the boy. He writes, "Were we supposed to draw lots for him or make use of him in alphabetical order, or in order of seniority? Newby reports that then, three very young girls were brought out. They knelt before the men on cushions in an attitude of submission and the men chose to take these three for their pleasure. Soon these girls were terrified. Before going to the brothel, these British men put a dark dye on the exposed parts of their bodies. The men's contrasting white torsos caused the children to "set up a great wailing" once the men stripped off their clothes. However, Newby and pals felt no cause to pay heed! Instead, Newby reports, the three men felt elation about the three 'fresh' girls. In the end, Newby rather crows that the children had gone on to please the men! Indeed, he reports that the girls they must have been double-jointed! Otherwise the postures they had been able to assume for the men would not have been possible! No part of this encounter appears to distress the author that "these girls have only just come up from the country", were 'fresh' and had 'only just begun". Indeed, following the several pages about this encounter, the reader encounters one lone statement featuring two sentences. They are about passing a language exam and anticipation for a new posting.I will make this my last look at Newby.
This book could have been a masterpiece if Newby had cut it from 382 pages to about 250 pages, while retaining the character studies, the humor, and the descriptions of their various patiently-borne hardships, and deleting the extremely repetitive anecdotes about temples, ghats, shoreline features, minor historical events, etc., etc.The intermittent gems of descriptive prose, and his humor, kept me going to the end - at which point I was relieved to have finished it
